  2. Renewal of Environmental Impact Assessment approved by MARENA in 2007.
  3. Study areas: noise, archeology, flora, fauna, socio-economic, geotechnical, soils, water bodies, climate.
  4. It's the kind of energy that causes less adverse impacts to the environment.

The project is located in area that already has been tapped for livestock. No alteration to the natural ecosystem.

Environmental Benefits

Based on the generation fuel-based pollutants, the project will replace the issuance of more than 3,000,000 tonnes of carbon dioxide over the lifetime of the project. Additionally the project will enable Nicaragua to avoid the emission of several other pollutants in the atmosphere. (Source: EIA).

Environmental impacts and mitigation measures

1. Noise:

  • Designing for Low Aerodynamic Noise from wind turbines.
  • Background noise masker (waves of the lake, leaves and snapping of tree limbs, etc.).
  • The noise decreases rapidly with distance.

2. Birds:

  • Distances between rows to allow wind turbines have "corridors" for movement of birds.
  • Installing Sonic disiduadores
  • Under flight of birds and transmission line just 50 m lower risk of collision.
  • Monitoring program for birds in busiest months after the project is in operation (April-May, September-November).

Environmental impacts and mitigation measures

1. Flora:

  • Low impact because herbaceous vegetation (grass) in pastures for livestock.

2. Soil:

  • Erosion and compaction in specific areas for excavation, earthmoving and road clearance.
  • Revegetation in most of the area at the end stage of construction with fast growing native species (star) and filled with soil that was extracted and compiled during the excavations.
